Overview
Growth factors, also known as cytokines, are proteins produced by cells in the body that stimulate the migration and build-up of cells that help new tissue to grow. Growth factors are an integral part of the body’s healing process.
Detailed Description
Growth factors help attract cells and proteins to the wound site, including immune cells to fight infection. They may be helpful in creating a new supply of blood vessels and stimulating and increasing the production of connective tissue.
Human platelet derived growth factor is made in a laboratory using recombinant DNA technology. The result is a topical gel containing the derived growth factors. Clinicians use human platelet derived growth factors on diabetic foot ulcers to assist in wound healing.
