  • Acne- Systemic antibiotics

    Overview
Systemic antibiotics are used in people with inflammatory acne and are usually prescribed in addition to topical agents.

    Detailed Description
Systemic antibiotics target the bacteria P. acnes that are thought to be responsible for local infection in acne. Common antibiotics that may be prescribed are tetracycline, erythromycin, doxycycline, and minocycline. Acquired bacterial resistance to systemic antibiotics has limited their long-term effectiveness in some cases. As for all medications you use, it is important to follow instructions on how to take systemic antibiotics since certain foods may interfere with their absorption. Furthermore, antibiotics may interact with other drugs, and they are not without side effects. Be sure to tell your physician what other over-the-counter, herbal, and prescription medications you are taking.
