  • Corticosteroids

    Overview
Corticosteroids are a type of anti-inflammatory drug that physicians use to treat keloid and hypertrophic scars, among other uses.

    Detailed Description
Scar tissue is a result of an imbalance in the process of collagen development and breakdown. Collagen production in keloid and hypertrophic scars exceeds collagen breakdown, causing collagen fibers to grow layer upon layer. Since steroids reduce the development of collagen and promote collagen breakdown, treatment with corticosteroids can soften and flatten a scar.

Physicians administer corticosteroids via injections into the scar or topical application to the scar’s surface. Because physicians administer the steroids superficially, little absorption into the bloodstream occurs.
